I have a 99' xr650L and I found a tank I want from a 96' xr650. Would this be a direct swap?

I can't do it from my phone but here's a trick I use.
Go to the Mountain Adventures site and use their online parts diagrams to get the part numbers for both bikes and see if it's the same.

well according to that it wont fit, they are different part numbers darn it. Thanks for website though man, very useful!

NOTE: if installing on 1997 and newer models you will need to relocate front turn signals so they don't hit the front portion of the tank when turning.
All of the XR 650L models from 1993 and up have the same frame.
if you want it, you CAN find a way to make it fit

well its a oversized tank and its half the price of a new one so I may take a shot on it, just don't wanna spend money on a tank I can't use lol.
Ok I went a few different sites and most of the oversized tanks say xr650L (All) so now Im leaning towards it will fit. Wish the seller knew the manufacture of the tank... darn it lol.
The tank tunnel in the front is bigger in the XRL to clear the rectifier than the XR, which has no rectifier. It wont be an easy swap. For some reason you cant get all of the gas out of an xrl tank. You'll be dead in the water and there's gas sloshing around. If you'll weld balance tube nipples, (ha ha, I said nipples)at the front bottom of the tank, you'll get 20 or 30 more miles out of a stock tank. We did this with ours. Let me know and i can send you a picture.
