Maybe the name change is an attempt to run from litigation. You know like how a transmission shop will screw folks over left and right for 2 or 3 years then close/rename/move or all the above.

I been on that kick for a long while now. Some argue that this, the ODT that we are on right now, is social media.
Its got all the same wrong information mixed in with a sprinkle of truth, same as any other. Plus, we do be socializing here and it is media. I mean, I'm here and I'm anti social media. Just a moral quandary that I have myself.
You could argue that we don't post up out identifying info here but most of us who've been here a while are pretty damn identifiable. Wouldn't be hard to figure out who I am, were one so inclined

Here's the real difference:

ODT is simply showing information posted by members, with light moderation based on a mild set of uniform, published rules.

You are the ultimate editor of the info you consume here. Ads aren't targeted to you specifically, based on a history of your behavior. They're just general, topical and sponsorship type ads.

FB (Meta!), on the other hand, via algorithms, feeds you content deliberately designed to motivate you to click, so they can make more money. And the pyschology research they've done says the best way to do that is to keep you outraged. It's the social media version of the network news mantra "if it bleeds, it leads." They want you bloodied and angry, because that keeps you clicking. For a grown man, that might be a problem, but if you infer what those algorithms do to adolescents and teenagers, with incomplete / immature personas, the mental damage is far more likely to be serious.

Like many special interest forums, ODT is technologically one (relatively benign) step forward of the old, dial up bulletin boards. Facebook, Pinterest, Youtube, and the other major, social platforms, are 10+ years more advanced in their business model, in ways I don't consider good for human beings.
