china is out of money! 24 trillion in debt and experiencing bank runs and their own bank failures at the moment.
meh this is debatable
while i agree with your sentiment regarding chinas economic power being overestimated on a regular basis, it is hard to judge that countries economic weight in general
i mean until recently (last august i think) china had kept its dollar out of the free market and didnt allow it to be traded, instead opting for an adjustable peg system.
with the APS china would peg its dollars value artificially against ours. that way their dollar could rise and fall in value, but the purchasing power for western corporations and entitiys would be the same, thus with the same price margin western companies would still find it economically viable to seek outsourced labor.
china would essentially keep its dollar low in relation to our own (advantageous for the chinese government and western companies, bad for the chinese people themselves)
like i had mentioned though, china has recently allowed limiting trading of its dollar now against the australian dollar
whats interesting is to see how geographics are now playing an increased roll in trade than it has in the longest. even though information and travel is easier than before one would think that geographics would be less of a factor for trade relations. the trend however is to find closer establishments offering the same services so to speak. the trend started in the 90s and you can now see it with NAFTA, the EU, and now australia, oceiana, and southeast asia are forming their own trade group
crazy stuff i tell ya, with so many factors it makes it hard to gauge the economic abilities and limitations held by a stand alone country, you have to apply the outside market forces and trade agreements made with foreign groups
