I am looking to get my 10yo a rifle for christmas. He has been shooting a single shot .22 and .410 for the last 3 years. I am trying to decide between a bolt gun in .223 so he can learn to shoot with a scope and enjoy shooting for long periods or an AR and getting the chance to let him help me build his gun. Just looking for everyones thoughts on this. Also he has experience with a semi auto pistol and my model 60.

Id go with a nice AR in 223/556 to start. perfect for learning to shoot an work on accuracy. not to mention, you can always goto different calibers with a simple change of the upper and in some cases a new BCG too. A 223 is just fine for hunting considering he more than likely will never take a shot over 100yds. If you're wanting to get him a Bolt action rifle, Id go with a 243 or max a 270. Both will do just fine for him an will last a very long time

Do AR together. Use an adjustable stock so he can fit it.

You can always get a .22 adapter, too.

Building a rifle with your son will be a memory that will last with him forever. I cant wait until my son is old enough to do a project rifle build for him

I think the AR platform is awsome, but i would go with a bolt gun to start. Just to much good stuff that comes from the a bolt gun. i agree completely on the build it together aspect too!

If he hunts he will use a marlin 1894 in .44 or my AR in 6.8. I am leaning towards an AR especially with PSA running their black Friday sale. Again I am undecided but still looking for thoughts.
