You've got $400 to Spend - What would your EDC setup be?

$400 is thin, but I will play because I love these scenarios.

Assuming you need the knife and light:
Yes, the Shield-$286
20 rds of good SD Ammo-$12
Byrd Medowlark 2 Combo Edge by Spyderco-$27
Nightstick MT-210 single AA flashlight-$29.
This leaves you with $46 to scrounge up a holster of your choice.

Now, how I would do it:

Shield-$286
Sidecar Holster-$100
Ammo-$12
Bottle of Coconut Water-$2

Ruger LC9S - $230
Remora holster - $20
Fiocchi extrema xtp Ammo - $15
Cheap Gerber folding knife = $20
Cheap flashlight ( I don’t know much about cheap flashlights)
2 Spare magazines - $30

How do you EDC the coconut water, just the ole bottle in back pocket method?

So a friend of mine was discussing EDC gear and firearms, and we got to talking about how much certain things cost, like Ammo, holsters, firearm etc. and I said a lot of the costs that people put into their loadout is really just for security, and that for around the cost of the average Glock (say $500) I could get an entire EDC setup. He laughed and said it was impossible but I got to thinking... What if I could come up with an EDC setup for $400? Bear in mind it would be something basic, nothing top of the line, but not bottom of the barrel either. We agreed that the setup would consist of the following parameters:

  • Knife
  • Multitool
  • Flashlight
  • Holster
  • Firearm
  • Defensive Ammo

Using what I currently own and have carried/used, I came up with the following based on current pricing:

  • M&P SHIELD 9mm (1.0 model w/o thumb safety) - $286.99 on Grabagun
  • HYBRID ARMORY CAPSULE PRO HOLSTER (black) - $22.00 at the Hybrid Armory website (with promo code DAILYCARRYSOLUTIONS for 10% off)
  • VICTORINOX SAK SPARTAN (black) - $22.00 with Amazon Prime
  • TANGRAM SANTA FE (black) OR TANGRAM AMARILLO (black) - $29.99 with Amazon Prime
  • SOFIRN SF14 + BATTERY + CHARGER (3 Modes) - $21.99 (or THORFIRE TG06S + BATTERY + CHARGER [5 Modes] - $24.80) with Amazon Prime
  • SIG SAUER V-CROWN 124GR 9MM AMMO (20 Rds) - $12.99 at Academy Sports

That brings the setup to $395.96 if you choose the Sofirn SF14 or $398.77 if you choose the Thorfire TG06S.
* I chose these two flashlights because they deliver at least 500 lumens and use either AA or 14500 rechargeable batteries, and the package includes a battery and charger already.
** I also put a choice in knives as some states allow folders as long as they are under 3 inches in blade length.

It was kind of fun finding a way to get everything within budget so I figured I'd ask what you'd put together as your EDC setup for $400 total.

What would your options be?
Add phone keys and wallet, how do you carry all of this?

Why, a man purse, of course!

Hungarian FEG PA-63 9x19 Makarov,- $150 (pawn shop)
Uncle Mike's IWB holster- $15
Extra magazines can be found, but are not cheap- $36
20 rounds Hornady critical defense- $20
200 rounds Monarch steel case practice ammo- $45
I also bought an OWB holster, cheap nyllon w/spare mag holder- $20

My total investment for gun, ammo, practice ammo, extra mag, and holsters, $286

My Streamlight Pro Tac 350 lumens was around $40.

I have too many EDC knives to list, but lately I've been carrying a Kershaw USA Ken Onion Scallion. I have a couple of them and really like them. They're around $40.

I do love the FEG PA-63, and the 9x18 Makarov round.
