Holy crap. Why didn't you guys tell me it was so much fun???

After nearly a year of talking about it, a buddy and I finally made it out to CMP yesterday to see what all the fuss is about.

We started out on the 100yd range just to make sure our stuff was sighted in properly. (I had only done zero'ing indoors at 25yd and calculated the proper drops to get the 100yd zero and 50/200 that I'd chosen for my rifles. Spot on.

First shots of the day with the AR at 100yd

One thing to note.. since their electronic target systems are acoustic, it had lots of trouble with my 300 blackout. It didn't pickup most of the sub-sonic shots, but did get most of the supers. The fellow at the range mentioned they were looking to add a different sensitivty level for blackout.

Once we were satisfied with the zeros, we wandered over to the 50ft pistol bays and shot the steel dueling trees for a bit. Pretty fun.

Then we went over the 200-600yd range.

I just had my AR with a Primary Arms red dot, but my buddy brought his 308 Remington 700. We decided to screw my Omega suppressor on there to try,.. and man... what a treat. Reduced the recoil a ton and tightened the groups up a good bit.

Now on to the shooting... here's some of the results.

My first 4 shots through the Remington 700 at 300 yards.

After adjusting the scope a bit...

The Remington 700 was setup with a 20x scope... so even at 600yds... it wasn't that hard. It was a warm one... so dealing with the mirage was the toughest part. This was my first time shooting beyond 100yds... and I'm no "expert" rifle shooter. Was my first time on the gun my friend brought. I liked it alot.

The Remington had my confidence so high, I decided to give the AR with a Primary Arms red dot a try. I was surprised with my shooting.

My 50/200 zero that was done on a 25yd indoor range was pretty spot on I'd say.

Shooting the AR with Primary Arms red dot at 300yds. Had to hold to the top of the black circle to get those impacts.

And while not a crazy tight group... this is the AR with the Primary Arms red dot at 600yds. Estimating with the mil-dots on the Remington 700's scope.. I was using approximately a 4 1/2ft holdover to land these shots.

I was pretty pleased with it. Even making contact exceeded my expectations at 600 yards.

So I'm hooked. Was pleased to see Remington was running a $75 rebate on the 700's right now... so I couldn't help myself. Got the 20" threaded model with the Hogue stock (which will likely be replaced asap). Now to search for some glass...

For somebody with little experience shooting distance, you did very, very well.
Really!

You know that kind of fun can be had a lot closer, since you're in Cumming.
The 3rd Saturday of every month at River Bend for $20 you can shoot 2,3 and 6 hundred meters.
It's called the hunting rifle shoot, see RBGC.org and the calendar for details.
PM me if you want more scoop....
