I usually carry a Leatherman Wave plus for just the reasons you describe. Adding a pocket clip is what made it work for me. The OEM belt holster is too much trouble.

If I remember right, he went through a pretty big federal lawsuit 2 or three years ago, related to one of his giveaway trucks and modification of the emissions system. Soon after he said that they would be phasing out diesel project vehicles and taking a new direction.
You've gotten good service out of that one. My father had a similar experience with an '04, but it was wrecked at around 160k. For yours - you'll need to listen for roller follower failure - if you plan keep it long term. The roller bearing seem to wear out regardless of good maintenance.

They've supposedly revised/upgraded the design, though I don't know if it worked well. Regardless, 3 valve Ford engines aren't a good investment. There is a company that offers a cam phaser eliminator kit with fixed timing gears and a programmer to make it all work.
For what it's worth - he said that the alternators "would be working against each other and cause damage to electronics" - suggesting that two alternators running at once would overload the systems on both cars and pop something. I don't think that's a likely scenario either, but not as dumb...
