  1. fishing "kits"

LOL, good point. I actually looked up "lost in the woods" stories when I was refreshing my pack this year. One lady died after 26 days but apparently just really didn't know what she was doing...
  2. fishing "kits"

It depends what the purpose is. If it's just a kit to survive if you get lost in the woods, I don't think it needs to be much. You just have to make it until a search party finds you. I do think the altoid tin kits are too small though. It doesn't take up much space/weight to pack a better kit.
  3. Deals on Prep Items

This turned out to be a good source for small items to refresh kits: https://first-aid-product.com/
  4. Get a compass

The trend is reversing some. I tried to put together a gift of US made tools for someone 10yrs ago and couldn't afford to do it. A few years ago, I tried again and was able to find a number of basic tools US made for reasonable price. Thanks for the update but don't sweat it, it's tough to...
  5. Get a compass

I don't really think orienteering would be a big deal unless you're far from any known landmarks. Most of the stories of people getting really lost didn't have even a basic kit with them. Really goes to show the need for the essentials though. One lady got off trail to pee and died later from...
  6. Get a compass

I'm refreshing my hiking/get-home bags and was looking through some old GHB/BOB threads here. There's been a lot of good content lists posted, but I'm shocked how many of those lists are missing a compass. Some of those lists were pretty long and complete, but missing a compass. I felt like a...
  7. Solar activity today.

Solar storm of 1859 Nobody knows if the next one will be next month or 100yrs from now. Nobody is going to spend a lot of money monitoring for something that probably won't happen within the current election cycle.
  8. Couples and Families to Plan and Prep together

I don't think the bickering would be any different. I've got 3 kids. My life is a SHTF situation. Well, it hasn't actually hit the fan. It has hit the walls a couple times though. yep.
  9. Jockey Shorts!

These are pretty good: http://www.allamericanclothing.com/made-in-usa/VIPBB.html I have to wear them when hiking otherwise the boys start doing something like this:
  10. Bug Out Bags

I talked about a BOB with my wife. LOL. With three kids, We'd need to have a bug out truck set up. My get-home gear is pretty weak so I went with option 3.
  11. If you were to bury something for an emergency, what would it be?

I would bury a lot of high-quality low-tech porn. Its on zero prepper lists. I'll just trade for anything else I need.
  12. Repair tape. What's your favorite brand?

I've used a few brands and I can't recall the best. There seems to be two categories. There's the thin cheap stuff and the thick more expensive stuff. The thin stuff is crap. Just found this while surfing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape
  13. Brilliant Idea! - Infographics Thread for SHTF & Helpful Tips for Everyday Life

Not arguing, just looking for the details: Is that for store bought eggs or fresh eggs? I could see that for fresh eggs. I imagine that store bought eggs might not last as long since some of that time has been spent before it hit the store. Plus, the shells are weaker. Also, I've read in...
  14. Brilliant Idea! - Infographics Thread for SHTF & Helpful Tips for Everyday Life

Should be a good thread! http://davidseah.com/blog/node/safe-shooting-infographic-the-two-most-important-rules-of-gun-safety/
  15. Questions we all need to ask ourselves.....

One thing I thought about that never gets mentioned is candy. Seems like that would be something to throw in a stockpile or even a BOB if you have kids. I remember reading that soldiers were able to make some pretty good trades with chocolate during WWII. Whenever I need a pickup late at...
  16. .22 Lr longer range lethality

I can't find the video but the guys at Moss Pawn did a rough 22LR test and found that it's lethal further than it is accurate. They got to where they were shooting so far that they couldn't hit the target anymore. It's a pretty awesome round.
  17. Home medical kit

Since you have such a big case, I'm suggesting some bulky items that you might need, SAM splint or similar. http://www.amazon.com/Ever-Ready-First-Aid-Universal/dp/B000FPGGC6/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1385393658&sr=1-2 I've used popsicle sticks for finger splints too. Tweezers and...
  18. SHTF/Survival Guns

They can't see or smell very well so concealment shouldn't be too tough. They're very sensitive to light. I'd pack one of those million lumen flashlights. My theory is that Bigfoot sightings are actually Giant Mole People scouts. Get ready, folks. They're coming.
  19. SHTF/Survival Guns

There could be all kinds of SHTF scenarios. If it's weather related and people are being generally nice, a 22LR would be good. If it's an enemy invasion, then an AR or AK is in order. If giant mole-people rise to the surface to enslave the human race, I might need a 50 cal. My strategy is to...
  20. SHTF Yesterday, Daycare evacuated

Great post and follow ups so far. Most of my camping stuff is in large plastic trunks. I just pull them out and throw them in the trunk. We went garage sale-ing for extra utensils and random stuff that we would normally have to pull from the house/kitchen. No forgetting that stuff...
