    Technically you didn't say for what... yes, I have slayed many small critters with a .223... For a deer, with the right bullet selection you should be just fine out to about 2-300 yards if you know what you're doing.

    Several loads of buckshot works pretty well. A lot of the heli-hunting in Texas has to use a shotgun due to property owner restrictions.

    That's what happens when you take a cartridge designed for killing a 1,500 animal at 5-600 yards and shoot a little Georgia deer at 100. Blowing apart varmint animals are one thing (which can be fun), but doing so to game animals is just a waste.

    A light .243 or .308 is probably the best deer rifle you can get for east of the Mississippi River. Why limit yourself to a scattergun?

    It can be done, especially on the small deer around here. Federal Fusion, anything with the Barnes TSX and the Winchester Power Point 64gr are all good bullets.
