Here is a rifle I won on GB a couple of weeks ago. It is a decently sporterized 1903 that appears to have started life as a National Match rifle.
The interesting thing about it, is that it was bought by Brigadier General George Rehm while he was a Colonel in 1948. He was a member of the...
Sport10990, Beautiful collection. Are you also on the CMP Forum and 1903 FB group? Is the Unertl sniper a real sniper combo or did you luck into the USMC-Sniper scope and install it on a good appropriate rifle?
I just picked up this nice sporterized Springfield 1903 rifle. It started as a 1928 National Match, and was sold by the Army to Col George Rehm in 1948. He was Executive Officer of Gen Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in the Pacific during WW2. He was later promoted to Brigadier General.
The bolt sleeve is a Remington and is parkerized, they were originally blued, smith corona has a scalloped shape to the sides. The stock has had the original cartouches removed and is stamped with the OG stamp which would have happened during a rebuild. Some rifles have the OG stamp and were...
Yes, it has a scant stock. It would have originally has a straight stock without grasping grooves. It would have originally been stamped with RA, FJA, and the ordnance wheel on the left side.
Not all, but all the ones I have seen from 1919 through late 1920's/early 1930's have been DAL. Early 1930's through the end of the 1903 NM production also had SA/SPG. There were also Pre-WW1 National Matches, but I don't know much about those specific traits.
Update: I have recently seen a few...
The early National Match rifles didn't have the star gauge mark on the muzzle(or the star gauge number stamped on the barrel), serial number etching on the bolt, etc. Those didn't start until after 1921.
The identifying features for the 1919 and 1920:
-Serial Number in the Mark 1 range, but...
I just picked up this Springfield 1903 that I won in an auction on Friday. The description didn't mention anything about it, but I recognized it as a 1919 National Match. These photos are as I received it, I haven't even wiped it down with a rag yet. It is dark and raining so I will have to get...
Just got this one back from the gunsmith having the scope blocks installed and handguard cut. It looks great, I just need to get an 8x scope to replace the 20x Lyman Super Targetspot it is currently wearing.
Base rifle is a late National Match with mismatched National Match stock and bolt...
Some of the early did have the factory engraving if I'm not mistaken. It think it should have the inspection stamps on the stock though, and not sure if the stock would have checkering.
