Good luck. 8mm used to be cheap and plentiful. Those days are gone.
Like milsurp collector, i will shoot corrosive ammo, and clean well after. A Mauser is a bit easier to clean than a FN-49.:)
Enjoy your Mauser, the 8mm is a great cartridge.
Your Granddad was issued the rifle, and he or someone sporterized it. I say enjoy it and shoot it! Don't worry about taking it back to original configuration, unless you want to do it. It is what it is, and will make a fine hunting rifle as it is. It will kick, like most other 30-06.

I love my Spanish FR-8, not your ordinary Mauser. But then, there is not a bad Mauser made. All of the variants are worthy of collecting, if in good shape.
The original stock on yours is getting harder to find. I have an Egyptian model, with I think a nice Century replacement stock...wish I had the original.
Providing your bore is good (mine is excellent), these guns are reasonably accurate, reliable, and very fun to shoot. They are very nicely...
That FR8 with lighter stock posted 2 pages ago, may have been a replacement stock blank from Springfield Sporters, from many years ago. I outfitted an FR8 with one, and regretted selling it. If your rifle came with a Timney trigger, it may have been mine in the past.
I have since bought...
This is going to kill you...
I have a Springfield 1903, made just after the heat treat issues resolved. I bought it from my late Uncle, who sporterized it in the 60's. It has a beautiful stock.
My Dad, who is in his late 70's, still hunts with his Remington 1903A4, that he sporterized in the '...
Congratulations on your find!
I have an Egyptian 8mm, with a Century stock. The metal is near 100 percent blueing, but the stock was replaced by Century Arms. It couldn't have been that bad, could it? OK OK, but it had a cheezy plastic butt plate.
After a several year search, I just found...
Yes, the original 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser) was designated J or JR, and is .318 . It was originally a round nose bullet. The "modernized" cartridge used a spitzer bullet, is designated JS, and is .323 .
I would not want to shoot the larger .323 in a smaller .318 bore. And shooting a .318 bullet in...
Buy some cerro-safe from Brownells or Midway USA, follow the instructions, and do a chamber casting. Very easy to do. It is inexpensive, and you can re-use it.
This way, you can see exactly what the barrel is chambered for. Is there a chance there is a burr in the chamber, or tiny piece of...
I have an Egyptian with the Century replacement stock, not as nice as your original. But the rifle, is a shooter, and fun. Congrats on your score, as well as being debt free!
I ended up closing my adj. gas port to minimum, and it still ejects forcefully. I bought replacement rear sight leaf...
Colbalt drier... thank you for that tip. When i used BLO (by itself), it seemed to never dry, although it makes a nice finish.
While on the subject, when do you think BLO / drier is better to use than other stock finishes, such as tung oil or Tru Oil?
Thanks for your insight.
Whether it helps accuracy or not, BLO makes the stock much nicer, pretty! Also much easier to touch up scratches. Let's see some more pics when you get a chance.
