Steel challenge is a great way to get going. It's cheap and easy with .22 LRs, and you can do it with rifles or pistols (or both depending on the venue).
Your stuff is usually not getting completely submerged. Bruce runs a good match that's not as "intense" as some of the other RnGs. A RDS would be just fine, biggest thing is having a good holster for the pistol.
As for targets, there will be one stage that will most likely go to 500ish yards...
I'm doing 1-day Run n Gun skills classes with the proceeds donated to the same chapter of the SFA as the event. I've got a Friday and Saturday class. We'll be doing some carbine and pistol work, as well as going over some gear, prep tips, etc. I think the attachment uploaded with a little more...
I'm still in, have a run time right before 9am.
I've got a couple Friday slots for the training class if anyone knows anybody interested. You don't have to be running the match to participate.

223 brass prep does suck. There are a few guys that do case prep if...
Who's headed up tomorrow? My schedule shifted a little to let me go. I've got an early run time. I won't be able to stick around long into the day, but hope to see some of you guys.
For the non-FB guys, Matt was able to get things setup to where I'm going to do a 1 day train up with all proceeds going to the same SF Association Chapter 38. I'm doing a Friday class and a Saturday class to help with schedules and such. In short, 150 rds of pistol and 150 rds of carbine for...
I wasn't great about taking pics, but Jimmy Nutt got a ton so hopefully he got something good.
This one was a very technically oriented shooting challenge. If you forgot about height over bore and what to do with 90 degree offsets, you were going to struggle.
Technically I DNF'd the last stage...
