11-29-14 Hunting

I dont look at the southern regs. the way it is divided you would think its another state and 2 different length seasons is BS. My license costs the same as theirs.

Hey man I could not agree more. I hunt both zones and was strictly a Northern zone hunter for most of my life. I think it is unfair that Southern zone hunters can hunt over bait but Northern zone hunters cannot. Although I can tell you for fact that once all the Southern zone hunters starting baiting deer, it made them even more nocturnal than they were before and the reason why is because everyone was doing it. The deer could bed down 100 yards from a feeder and stroll out there at 2 Am and grab a bite to eat. The only time feeders can give a real advantage is during the last few weeks of deer season, when the weather turns much colder on a consistent basis and vegetation dies off. Where I hunt the acorns are still fairly abundant, but dwindling. Still, the most heated part of hunting season is winding down and many guys are gearing up for the holidays and neglecting their feeders, not to mention hunting less. The deer will start hitting the corn and mixed feed much harder once the acorns are all gone. Hence, the best deer taken around us these past couple years were taken in late December and early January. And they were huge bucks, believe you me. Where am I going with this? Back to my point that it is complete BS the Northern zone hunters cannot bait, especially in late season, and I totally agree you should be allowed to hunt through mid January. If it were up to me we would extend the season until the end of January statewide. Sorry for the long winded post.

aren't those counties recognized as trophy counties and have special regs on antler length or inside spread? Yeah makes no sense and it has been argued forever with no change.I say 2 bucks 3 does and tags you send in.

Agreed.

They are trophy counties but I'm almost certain not the only trophy counties...Almost certain....I really have no idea about those counties or why they are allowed to hunt does throughout December...All I know is my land is surrounded by 4 of those counties. :D

Sorry to quote myself. I wasn't too lazy to go look after all...Almost all of South Ga. has the same days for legal doe harvest as the rest of the state. Dec. 1-Dec. 25 are buck only. The only counties excluded (for reasons unknown to me) are Harris, Talbot, Macon, Dooly, Randolph and Montgomery. 6 southern zone counties can hunt does all season long. The remaining counties are in the same boat as the North. I do not disagree with this at all, but instead of having doe days, why don't they simply cut the tag limits for does?

Can you give me a link to these regs. I've been looking g at the website and can't find where it says this. Not doubting you, just want to know before I go out next weekend.

Nevermind. I found it.

Whatever happened to sending our tags in? The tag system when we filled them out, tied them to the deer, etc. was a good system. From what I understand the state of Ga. doesn't even handle our tags anymore. I heard they were being handled in Missouri or some out of state hayseed department.

Here's one with some interesting info about trophy only counties for bucks. There are 9 total, and surprisingly, Lee County isn't one of them. Neither is Dougherty...

More very interesting info AND including that the 2013-2014 regs are the same as 2014-2015.

Here's a map from the GON website detailing the seasons for antlerless harvest. Keep in mind the DNR website^^ in the link above states the regs are the exact same as last season.

I do appreciate it. I only get one weekend to hunt and of course it's bucks only. Seems like my freezer will stay empty again this year.

That's the spirit...haha...Seriously, there are bucks everywhere. If there are does around you better believe there are bucks around. The only problem you have is only one week to hunt when the season has been open for weeks and weeks. Makes them a bit spooked but unless you are hunting a trophy only county you can very well take one buck that is any size. Nothing like a nice 4 point for the freezer. I have taken many of them, especially at the end of the season when my freezer is slacking in quantity. Good luck man.

I have a long weekend at my inlaws farm in toombs county next weekend. There are only 3 of us that hunt a few hundred acres so I may get lucky. Of course I'll be just as happy to shoot a hog too.
