1911 in .38 Super vs .45ACP

The .38 Super would be cool if it had provenance tracing it back to a '30's gangster or lawman. Other than that, .45 sounds like right choice for 'Murricans.

Oh, and, PICS...

That and the fact that the original is in 45. The numbers 1911 and 45 just belong together. That doesn't mean I wouldn't do a second gun in another caliber but if I was going with just one 1911 it would have to be fo fiv.

umm--rumor has it that the original 1911 weapon to the military by MR Browning was chambered in the 38 auto, which pre dates the 45 acp by a few years also.
they declined the caliber as they had such bad performance with the 38 colt.
also despite common wifes tales the projectile weight was 200 grains for the 45 acp, the military wanted 250 grain, they settled on 230.
ahh yes the much misunderstood 38 Auto/super.

if someone is going to shoot the gun, not a collectible and IF that someone does not reload then 45 acp (or 9 MM) makes a lot more sense to own.
the 38 Super ammo is hard to find, expensive and projectile type is very limited.
IF you reload though its great cartridge offering more energy than the 9 MM or the 45 acp and everything in the 9 MM projectile line is there for the reloader and at a reloading cost of the 9 MM as well.
38 Super loads are basically identical in power to the 40 S & W, usually just a bit ahead in energy of the 40.
