22 Mag or 17 HMR

Yep, I'm the same way. I have nothing against Savage, but the reviews I've read indicate that accuracy is spotty at best.[/QUOTE

Yep my cheap old savage shoots like crap!

The only reason I own anything in 22lr is for the girls to shoot. Once the youngest is big enough to shoot a 243 we won't have any 22LRs anymore.
You need to do more squirell hunting, but to answer your question I would say 22 mag. I have a marlin 25 and it's a tack driver! You ought to see what it does to a bushy tails head!

I will definitely agree whole heartily with the crosswind shooting. I try and stay with the 25 gr. instead of the 20 gr. on the WSM 17, not a lot of difference but a little. It does as you say open up quite a hole on small game but a coyote beautiful.

Calm day I prefer the .17 HMR. Windy day the .22 is not effected nearly as much at greater distances. Both have a place in my opinion but it I had to choose one .17 HMR. I like the velocity!

22 mag...don't trust that 17 on a coyote...

But I own both...........I have a Savage in 17 and a Marlin also.
I have a Marlin and a Henry in 22 as well as a CZ that will out shoot 'em all...
