22 Mag or 17 HMR

I love the .17HMR and I love my Savage. I definitely wouldn't call it's accuracy "spotty". It's probably one of the more consistent guns I've ever shot. We were shooting bottle caps at 100 yards and then realized we could hit the nail holding the bottle cap to the backstop just as consistently.
We were talking about the 17 WSM, not the HMR. Currently, Savage is the only one making a bolt action for that round and it's pretty much junk. I would love it if Savage or anyone else came out with a good quality rifle. It would go to the top of my short list.

I am just partial to the 22 mag. It was one of my first guns. It's just a good all around small game round. As stated earlier it will take some bigger game if you hit the right spot. My cousin in the hills of Virginia wouldn't hunt dear with anything but a 22 mag. He never lost one either. SOM BITCH could shoot.

This, waiting on a better platform and option, I have shot the Bmag, its crap....

For hunting, definitely a .22wmr. It will kill a coyote DRT at over 100 yards I know for a fact and when I shoot small game I don't want it 'exploding', 'disintegrating' or any of the other things mentioned here as a plus. I eat the small game I shoot. Plus the option of more than double the bullet weight just makes it a no brainer.

Here data geeks! enjoy http://www.chuckhawks.com/compared_17HMR_22WMR.htm

Online I have had no problems in finding both.

I have CZ 455 with two bull barrels, 22mag and 17HMR. At 50 yards I find them equivalent. Beyond 75 yards the 17 is definitely more accurate and consistent than the 22 mag. At 100 yards there is no comparison. This is my only experience with these two rounds but on the other end I have tried several different bullets.
If I had to buy another one, it would be 17HMR.

But I like the 22Mag in my NAA Balck Widow
