lets face it I wouldn't choose either caliber for and Elk hunt but for flat out small varmint hunting to plinking I give the edge to the 17 myself.
.22 mag can and has dropped many a deer....or so I've heard

We were talking about the 17 WSM, not the HMR. Currently, Savage is the only one making a bolt action for that round and it's pretty much junk. I would love it if Savage or anyone else came out with a good quality rifle. It would go to the top of my short list.I love the .17HMR and I love my Savage. I definitely wouldn't call it's accuracy "spotty". It's probably one of the more consistent guns I've ever shot. We were shooting bottle caps at 100 yards and then realized we could hit the nail holding the bottle cap to the backstop just as consistently.
This, waiting on a better platform and option, I have shot the Bmag, its crap....We were talking about the 17 WSM, not the HMR.
