.270 vs .308 for hunting?

I’m all for 308 cause it’s easy to find and tons of surplus if your ever in a pinch.

I’d say there isn’t anything I couldn’t take in North America with a 308. I’m sure people would disagree but I feel confident in my ability. Not to mention you can get an AR10 pattern rifle and have lots of follow up shots.

But again that’s my opinion.

.308 outperforms .270 across the board in terms of velocity and energy ft/lbs under 300 yards.
The .270 shoots slightly flatter and carries a tad more energy at range, but unless you’re regularly shooting past 300 yards it’s not enough to notice.
.308 is also cheaper.
I’d go .308 over .270 any day.

Could depend on what you're hunting. Overall probably 308 for the win for the reasons stated above. It'd be hard to go wrong with either one

I keep both. .308 is good abundant common and powerful, .270 has been around since 1923 to 1925 and still killing deer, Jack O'Connor hunt with it for years with it. For garden variety caliber I keep both. Plenty rounds of those in my closet. They will do the job when the time comes

I switched over from 30-06 to .270wsm, and I'm glad I did. I took 2 shots with the gun last season and killed 2 deer. I know, shot placement and all that, but less recoil for an old me does the trick.

The 270 is a highly underrated cartridge. The fact is they are accurate and flatter shooting than the 308. The 270 does the same thing except it's flatter and it hits faster and when comparing 150 grain to 150 grain bullets the 270 has a higher ballistic coefficient and I think has a longer effective range. They will both take anything up to elk size easily. In Field and Stream I've heard of people killing moose with the 270. The 308 however, is the more versatile of the two. The 270 uses a longer action so you can graduate to a larger caliber later if you want to. For deer hunting I think either or is completely up to you. Faster, fatter 270 cartridge with lower recoil or the heavier recoil of the 308 with heavier bullet options and ammo availability is virtually everywhere.

If you're making this purchase for a dual purpose bug out/ deer hunting situation then I would lean towards the 308 just because of the support it would have after the fact. As we sit now either / or would be an excellent choice for deer hunting. If you ever build or buy a AR-10 then the 308 could be covered in that as well. IMHO

I sold all my 270s and gave my brother in/law a Remington 700 BDL that I bought in 1977 in 270. I have about a dozen rifles in 308 so one less caliber. Never had a deer run off shot with 270 130 grain core-lock though. Just personal preference, because both will do the job.
