30-06 vs 308

30'06 for me. I love my 308, don't get me wrong but the question was if you could have one. The '06 is loaded with 125 to 220 gr. bullets and has a reduced recoil Remington load, as well as a Norma loading that duplicates the 300 H&H Mag. The accuracy edge most people give to the .308 and if you have a full blown target rifle maybe but most hunters will never see the difference. Besides it's all subjective anyway, my Savage '06 has no trouble shooting into a half inch, my Remmy '08 won't do much better than 1 1/4".

Anyone who thinks the .308 cartridge is more accurate just cause they read an article online, needs to have a reality check.As hard as we try to eliminate all the variables, All rifles are different, All shooters are different and Each shot is different. FACT the 30-06 will do everything the 308 will do and more. (except fit into tiny rifle chambers)

idk ...ive shot alot of both rounds ...and i will agree the accuracy issue is undetectable at best ...but i dont see many advantages the 30-06 has over the 308 ....ive never hit a deer in the lungs with a 308 bullet and then thought ....man i bet that sucker would have been alot deadER with an 06 ...or i have never sat in a stand and thought ...dang ...if i had only brought my 30-06 instead of this 308

The same could be said with my 30-30 or 303 for that fact. If your hunting anything more than deer though, the '06 is the way go. If you're hunting Moose, Brown Bear, or Caribou I believe the heavier, longer bullets with more sectional density available in the '06 win hands down. If we're talking just deer, I'll stick with my 6.5x55. The question of if you could only have one, you have to take in consideration that the '06 will do everything the 308 will do plus more, but the 308 will not do every thing the '06 will do.

Over all I would have to say .308. You can find great semi/full auto weapons in .308
I know you can find 30 06 in auto, but really, would you want to?

Both rounds are great just depends on the application.

I had a military rifle once that shot the 30. 06 I think it was called an FN49. Anyway it was Belgian and usually in 8mm, but some were in 30.06 You would have wanted that rifle if you shot it. I traded it off for something else, but can tell you today it was a mistake.

I have both, but just like the 06 better.

Spike, I've been looking for a FN49 in 06 for a while, even bought one that turned out to be an 8mm once it arrived. And I thought the M1 was heavy....

Might be due (my favoritism) to the 06 being an original "American" round from the get go.
