Going through the ammo pile tonight, I found a few boxes of 30.06 that I got eons ago with a Garand purchase. Some of the boxes of 20 have red tape to open to get into the box. They are definitely old-and--half. Does this mean corrosive or otherwise nasty?

If we're talking about US military surplus ammo, made in the USA, then any .30-06 ammo made in or before 1951 should be corrosive, and the last half of 1951 is when Lake City Army Ammunition Plant switched over to only non-corrosive primers for .30-06 ammo. So, if you see '52 on the headstamp, or later, you should be good if you wanted to shoot it without the hassle of corrosive ammo cleaning procedures.

Note that many other countries of the world used .30-06 weapons throughout the 20th century, and their domestic ammo plants may have chosen to use corrosive primers until a much later date, 1970s even.

Good info. Thanks y'all. I did check out the rounds, they are marked DEN 43. Also, the primers all have red markings, done after production...

DEN = Denver Army Ordnance Plant.
A huge ammunition factory built in 1941, and closed right after the war ended in 1945.
The site is still in use by various federal agencies who took up the empty factory buildings and had new buildings constructed at the site, on the west side of Denver.
