The 30-30 is a better choice. The 45/70 has a high arching round which can get deflected by low tree limbs etc. that you would not think were even in play.
That's the nice thing about a 45-70 you can do tree pruning with it

Had one of these in my 20's ( many moons ago!) & it is indeed one of the finer oft overlooked hunting rifle/caliber combinations. Handloaders, as with the .45-70 are in for very pleasant treats with this. Like me, you may , one day, wish you still had it in your safe.How bout a 444 ? I have a nice JM marlin 444ss for sale :-)
