4-0 Steel Wool and What for Rusty Shotgun?

I have an old Stevens pump with a pretty solid coat of leopard print looking rust all over it. Not looking for a perfectly clean end result as far as finish goes. I just want to clean it up as good as possible and put a stop to the rust. Looking for suggestions on what to use with good old steel wool to help in the process.

The best way to make that finish shine again is going to be oxide conversion by boiling it and carding off the loose oxide. Easy for small parts, but a little more difficult for the barrel. It can be done with a turkey burner over a piece of gutter. It sounds like a complicated process but it's really not, I've done it a handful of times with rusty blued parts and it always comes out great. Boiling those parts will give a much better results than attacking it with steel wool in its current state. Plenty of videos on youtube on how to do it.

Never heard of it but it sounds kinda promising. Hardware store item or gun refinishing item?

I use 0000 Steel wool and whatever oil i have around. Ive used everything from Kroil to regular motor oil with good results.

Let.ke Google up Kroil and see what happens. Is it kinda like Marvel's Mystery Oil or more of a light machine type oil?

I use steel wool and Blue Wonder, it's hard to find sometimes but was formulated to remove rust without harming blueing. Usually get from Brownells. You will need to go back over with a gun oil of your choice
