I may be trading into a 2000 GMC Sonoma 4x4 auto trans with the 4.3 vortec 6cyl. Does anyone have anything good to say about these engiines or any bad. Has roughly 115k on it.

Yes, I don't get the best mileage with mine either. I've heard if you upgrade the pulleys, anda KN filter with a cold air intake it'll get over 20mpg...

Vortecs rock. I own two 5.3's now and have had my share of 4.3's and 4.8's. Awesome motors with plenty of power. Last forever with minimal maintenance. A buddy of mine has a S10 with almost 300k on it and still drives it everyday.
Get you a magnaflow, bolora or quiet flowmaster on it. Not for the sound but to unrestrict the exhaust thus = mpg!
I have the same 4.3 / 4x4 truck configuration with a Chevy badge on it. Extra cab body style and get between 17 and 20 mpg now. Was 20 mpg when I bought it from 1st owner at 124,000 miles. Now 201,000 miles and still cranks like a new one, no oil consumption between changes.
Ask the owner if he has replaced the intake gasket yet. A lot of them go out around 100K and up. Mine blew out around 175,000 but no bother with a brother in law mechanic.

I have an 03 S10 with the 4.3. No issues with the engine yet but get ready to replace the heater core (did that Friday, took 10 hours) and the A/C compressor.
And don't be like me and think "oh I'm going from a V8 to a V6, my mpg is going to be so much better" lol.
