45-70 load for H&R Single Shot Rifle

I have a buddy who wants to hand load his 45-70 Government H&R rifle.

He is currently using a Winchester 300gr JHP load with a muzzle velocity of 1,880 fps and wants a load similar to the Winchester load. He will use the load for whitetail deer.

What loads have you worked up for the 300gr JHP? Any other favorite loads?

I hear that the IMR 4198 powder may be the best for the 300gr JHP...your thoughts???

4198, 3031,4064 ,4895 have all proven to be good with the 45-70.

I am also finding that 4198 is a good load. Have you found a particular load works well? Just trying to find a good powder to work with without incurring a high cost for different powders.

i like 64 grns of accurate 2495. equals 2100 fps. compressed load but lower pressure.

Ever thought about using black powder? the 45/70 seems to like it very much.

I've had good luck with 4064, 3031 and Varget.
