6.8 or 308 for hunting

Plain old .223 AR? I know these monster 100lb deer in GA die pretty quick when popped with a 62gr Fusion. But don't let me sway you from a new gun.

6.8 SPC is a fantastic round. I have no problems hunting any animal in Georgia with mine and it is a good light weight stalking rifle as well. The military is going to the 6.8 and when that happens the price of the ammo will drop. Hornady Black ammo is a good option in this caliber and is right at $20.00 a box.

From everything I’ve read, the new military 6.8 caliber round will not be 6.8 SPC but rather a brand new round designed specifically for the program bid.

How about 6.5 Grendel?
I have a 6.5 Grendel. Gonna try it on hogs in December. I like the ballistics. However, what looks good on paper doesn't always translate to real life performance.

My buddy has used a .300 BO using supersonic ammo, and truthfully? His lever action .357 mag with 180gr bullets does a better job on big hogs. I'm just not that impressed.

What 300 ammo is he using?

6.8 SPC is the only thing I use to hunt deer or hogs with. Has been for 7 or 8 years. It has plenty of power to kill deer or hogs out to 300 even 350 if you are good enough shot. It has taken a few moose and elk. It has greatly reduced recoil from the 308 and in the AR platform it is much lighter than an AR10 sized rifle. Ammo is not hard to find or expensive. Starline makes brass for it as well as Sellier and Bellot. Perfect round for what I need it for. I shoot a 12.5" SBR. It will be suppressed when ever my can gets out of jail. Should be soon, paid for it Dec 2018. It also makes a great varmint round. You can load it all the way down to 85gr projectiles. 110 V-max is deadly on yotes.

I’ve got a 6.8 and a few .308s. Why not have both? 6.8 AR is my hog stalking rifle. I run a two point blue force gear sling, so the rifle is always where I need it. I don’t like shoulder carry for stalking, as opportunities present themselves very quickly sometimes, and a traditional shoulder sling is just too slow to throw up. 6.8 is plenty for big pigs, I’ve killed 175-200 lbs pigs with .22 mag and 62 gr 5.56. I’m gonna shoot at lest a deer or two with 6.8 this year too. I suppress with an omega .30 can. 6.8 is standard 5/8 threads. Get the best mags you can find, the cheap ones are finicky.

One of the perks to 6.8 is that it performs well from a short barrel at typical hunting ranges (less than 200 yards), so it is a very good pistol or SBR candidate. Shorter is better IMO, as long as velocity doesn’t suffer too bad. 6.5 Grendel is pretty much on par performance wise with 6.8, at least in paper, as long as you have an 18”+ barrel to get the velocity up on the 6.5. Also, Grendel target ammo is much cheaper if you want to punch paper.

Wilson makes some good parts for 6.8. I originally wanted ARP stuff, but grabbed a Wilson setup from a ODTer and I’m more than happy with it, although I would prefer a shorter barrel. Mines an 18in medium/heavy contour. I’m shooting inch groups with 90gr Silver State bonded rounds. I’m gonna order up some heavier rounds and see how they do in the future, but the 90gr will do fine for now. Ammo isn’t hard to find, most larger store carry it, but the selection isn’t going to compare to .308.
