6.8SPC-Smash or pass??

I have a 6.8. First question for folks is always do you reload? or what is your price tolerance for ammo? any interest in shooting suppressed/subsonic?

IMHO it's a great AR platform hunting round. Similar to 300blk supers, but with less drop if you plan to shoot middle range (200+).

Initially there was some screw ups with the SAAMI specifications for the chambers (hence the "spc II" chambers) that gave it a bad rap. But for the size of the round it's got solid weight behind it. If you are only shooting supers it's a bit better than the 300bo, but with blackout you have the option to shoot subs as well (at least it's easier to shoot subs, I'm sure someone has been shooting 6.8spc subsonic).

biggest disadvantage is needing a new bolt and somewhat picky about magazines (you need specific 6.8spc magazines and the Magpul 6.8mag only work in the LWRC Six8 lower). Brass isn't that hard to find.

I reload a ton of 6.8 ammo with a host of projectiles and powders. With all my 6.8 guns will eat from any mag you use. The C products from Mag warehouse for 18 bucks feeds them just fine. I have never had a mag problem.
As far as bolts go I have used reg .223 carriers with the Noveske 68 dollar bolts and it's just fine.

Other than the diameter they are two completely different rounds. If I read an article correctly the new 6.8 round is a AR10 platform but don't quote me on that.

AR Performance recommends telling them or him if you are going to shoot Remington ammo so he can enlarge the gas port. Personally I haven't had a problem with Remy ammo in my builds but I only used AR Perfomance in 3 or 4 builds and didn't have any issues.

The barrel length really doesn't benefit on length like a .223 so you have another point there. That's a plus when weighing your options on a SBR or pistol length gun.

Agreed. I’ve never had issues with Remington ammo in 6.8, I just find it boring. And I don’t like the brass. Large primer… I shoot Remington only for fauling a barrel, testing magazines, etc. So many better projectiles available. I like SSA brass.
I also find 6.8 to be a bit more accurate in general than other calibers. Maybe that is because the ammo is generally of higher quality than other target loads such as 55g in .556, or 762x39 junk. Its pretty easy to get to 1moa in all the barrels I have owned. Usually with more than 1 load.

I smashed the 6.5G over the 6.8SPC since I wanted better ballistics at distance in the lighter AR15 platform. The 6.8 is good with short barrels or inside 2-300 yds after that the 6.5 shines and has a better nock down at farther distance. When I jumped in the intermediate rifle for AR15 platform Wolf steel case 6.5 was $0.25 rd and fun plinking. Fast forward to FJB and now ammo prices tripled but still under $1 rd for plinking. The projectiles for the 6.5 are way better than the 6.8 in variety of weights so if you reload you can better tune to the barrel as well not to mention brass availability. They both have their place but to each their own.

This deer was dropped where it stood with a 6.8. It is a great round in my opinion.
