9mm or .40 for personal protection?

I've heard a lot of good and bad about glocks. People either love them or hate them it seems. I've been looking into the Springfield XD9 sub-compact, and they seem like great guns, but they're just out of my price range at the moment.

Go shoot alot of different brands and then decide. All of opinions on here don't mean much if YOU don't like it or shoot it well.

I carry a Glock23 because I shoot it well and it performs like a Glock should... Nothing but perfection.

I recently rented a G23 and shot 100 rounds.

I love the size and feel of the G23 (which is the same as the G19,) BUT

I discovered that I HATE .40! (and yes, I have shot a LOT of different stuff. I have also HATE .357 and .44.)

To me-it is all about what you are comfortable with. A miss can mean the difference between life and death, and I just shoot 9mm much better than a .40. In a pressure situation, there is no doubt that I would perform much better with a 9mm.

The .40 just kicks too much for me. I actually enjoy shooting a .45 from time to time, but the .40 is like riding a mule. I can't stand that round. (Maybe it is smaller size of the G23 also, but I think that round is just too hot for my taste.)

G19-9mm all day for me!

Many, many years ago Jeff Cooper said carry the largest gun that YOU will carry & can shoot well.Good advice that has stood the test of time.

Seems like a good philosophy. I am more recoil-sensitive in a pistol than most people, I guess. And trends mean little to me. I can remember when everyone had to run out and get a 10mm because it was all the rage... Talk about kicking like a mule!

Alot of people shoot a 9 better than a 40. Start out with the 9 and work on technique. Then when you buy another gun, try a 40. I'd save up and buy that Glock instead of the Sigma. When you buy the 40, you will want to keep the 9 for a range gun.

The other good thing about the Glock is you can buy the 40 or the 357 Sig and if you don't like the caliber or want to practice with cheaper ammo you can just buy a drop in conversion barrel and a couple of mags and shoot the 9MM from the same gun. Actually you can have all 3 calibers with a quick drop in barrel change. Glock gives you the most versatility in calibers AND sizes. For instance a Glock 27(40S&W) can shoot 40 or .357 Sig with a barrel change, 9MM with barrel and mag swap and use the 9/10/13/15/31 round magazines with or without finger extensions and +1/+2s. That's why I presently have 3 Glock 27s and am looking to trade my G22(or sell it) and get another G27.

One platform...3 calibers...a dozen magazine configurations. Much cheaper than 3 guns or more for the same options.
