9mm or .40 for personal protection?

Infantryman91,

Lots of good information. If you have a rental range, you can try out some compact/sub-compact pistols in both 9mm/.40 S&W. In general the smaller lighter the gun, the more it will move in the hand. Increase the mass of the bullet and or velocity of the projectile the more the felt recoil and movement.

For a first gun the 9mm will be the fastest to master and the ammo is a lot cheaper. It in my opinion would be a wise choice for a first carry gun. The most significant issue I found with carry is the thickness of the slide as I typically carry inside the waistband. A single stack will nearly always carry easier, rather than a double stack.

Shot placement is most crucial for a pistol as it does not typically have anywhere near the power factor of a high power rifle. A 9mm with good ammo is a good choice for a carry weapon, the .40 S&W is slightly better and the .45 ACP slightly better than the .40 S&W. All this is moot if "you" shoot poorly with it. There is only one way to find out and you have to shoot it in the gun you are considering to carry.

Most gun guys are real good guys and if a new fellow is trying to pick a gun/caliber will often hand you their pride and joy to allow you a magazines worth or more to enjoy and see if you like it. Your profile states Georgia and that's a big place. If you give a shout out perhaps a home dawg or two will square you away and help you make a choice.

Too many good guys here not to lend a helping hand to a good man.

Note! If you have a military ID card you can get a Glock for $398 + tax at certain Glock dealers.

Oh I'm sure I will. Stonewall rubbed off on me and finally after 2 years and shooting his Glocks, convinced me to go Glock. I like it this far. Thanks StoneWall!!!

Back to topic I owned a sigma and hated it.

The other good thing about the Glock is you can buy the 40 or the 357 Sig and if you don't like the caliber or want to practice with cheaper ammo you can just buy a drop in conversion barrel and a couple of mags and shoot the 9MM from the same gun. Actually you can have all 3 calibers with a quick drop in barrel change. Glock gives you the most versatility in calibers AND sizes. For instance a Glock 27(40S&W) can shoot 40 or .357 Sig with a barrel change, 9MM with barrel and mag swap and use the 9/10/13/15/31 round magazines with or without finger extensions and +1/+2s. That's why I presently have 3 Glock 27s and am looking to trade my G22(or sell it) and get another G27.

One platform...3 calibers...a dozen magazine configurations. Much cheaper than 3 guns or more for the same options.

X2! The G27 is an outstanding platform.
