Check out the metering results at silencerforum.com and sign up to look at the ones on nfatalk.org for some hard data. If it were me I'd go for the full-size for maximum suppression. It s a lifelong purchase pretty much, so get the one that is the quietest. I'm pretty sure the short has to be run wet to be very quiet, and the full is pretty light too.
I have the standard size myself and have shot the short....go with the full size.

After talking to John Hollister at AAC, the 9S needs to be run wet to get decent sound suppression. It sure does look cool through.
I bought a compact 9mm suppressor. I did get to try one before I bought it. It does need to be wet. The can I bought I plan to have jail broken and plan to use wipes in it to further help sound suppression. I wanted a can small enough to be holstered. If your looking for maximum suppression then a full sized can would be your best bet.

Exactly. Some cans are not user serviceable. There is a company that will open it up, thread it and make it user serviceable. I got such a killer deal on my can that I decided to go with it.
Does anyone make a can that could be screwed on a 9 MM AR and also used on a pistol (say a G-17)?
A lot of them can. Depending on the can, say an AAC Ti-rant for example, you'll just need to change the piston to a fixed barrel or a boosting version.
