I like glock 19s or 17s for a pure, simple defense weapon although some people hate the triggers.
I also like cz-75s which I shoot better than the glocks.
I'm not against sigs or HKs but I don't see the value in them beyond the other two I just mentioned. The sig pro is a nice shooter in the same price range. I shot a 40 cal version that was nice but mags are expensive.
Also I've never shot the PPQ but everyone that has one seems to love it.
Others like the smith and Wesson m and p and the Springfield xd should also be considered but I've never seen the need to buy or trade from what I've got.
You best bet before making a $500+ investment is to try several rentals at a range before dropping the coin.

Don't buy anything based on what you read here. We can make suggestions, but you should buy based on 1)what you shoot best, 2) what you will actually carry, 3)what fits your hand.

The P30 feels so good in the hand. I want to shoot one bad!
In addition to the incredible ergonomics, you have German engineering throughout. It's a great pistol. I'm in the process of liquidating my Glocks for HK as we speak.
P30L has to be one of the all time worst pistols I have ever had the displeasure of owning. Long creepy trigger pull, long creepy reset, and the ONLY time I ever shot it the hair trigger on the mag release caused the magazine to fall out under recoil.
