Advice on a good walking aid.

I find myself needing a walking aid sometimes. Not all the time but occasionally when my back is real bad and my knees go at it as well. What I need is somebody to give me the skinny on how to go to about it some of the insurance will cover it. I was thinking maybe a cane but sometimes that might not be enough. These last few days have been literally crippling and I'm hobbling around the house and just can't do much at all.

Anybody have some words of wisdom or advice on how to go about this?
For me, a cold pack on my back for abt 20 or 30 minutes after I wake up helps a lot. Also, for me anyway, just walking through the pain helps loosen it up. Always with a cane of course.

If you are on Medicare or other insurance a doctor should be able to prescribe a Walker and insurance cover it. Another approach would be to go to an assisted living and ask if they might have and extra you could have. When people die medical devices often get left at these places.

I don't know about daily use in an urban environment, but a walking staff (tall, at least as high as your face) and strong (in case you stumble and lean almost all your body weight on it, briefly) is very helpful for me when hiking in the woods or nature trails, even paved trails. Takes some of the weight off my legs AND aids in balance, which can be iffy at the end of a long hike when I'm weak and tired.

I have to use a combo of everything. A walker/rollator, 2 canes when that won’t fit where I need to go.
Of course I have had a hella time with my spine and legs for a couple of decades. I can’t walk on my own much anymore. The pain is just too debilitating.
You will adapt as you go along… I feel sorry for you that you are going down this path. Only because I know how it goes . Try to keep moving as much as possible !!
Good luck !

I normally don't sleep in the bed because of the extreme agony I go through when I wake up. I hadn't laid in the bed probably in about 4 months. The other night I just could not get comfortable and I was restless so I thought I would just go lay down for a little bit you know take an hour nap and try to get through it. I woke up 4 hours later and I could not move. It took 3 hours for my back to get straightened out. Tylonol, topical spray and the heating blanket in the recliner for 3 hours and it gradually subsided to a bearable degree. It felt like I had rheumatoid arthritis from mid back down to my butt crack. It was horrible! 😭 At level of discomfort I do not wish on my worst enemy. For real! Even Asbestos. 🤣

I went through lower back pain for 2 1/2 years before going under the knife. Best thing I have ever done. I was always saying that no back surgery period. But when you go to bed hurting and wake up in the morning hurting , time to do something. 4 screws and two rods installed and I feel great now. Can recommend physician if needed. Feel for you.

I have them all and I finally found a walking cane with a form fitting palm support. Then the VA sent me a Rollator, after my back surgery I picked up a standing rollator with arm supports, now I'm in a wheelchair due to a fall. Doc says it will take a year before a recovery and that was before the fall..

Prayers for you brother.
I can say I understand it because of my 3 fusions and all. Cages, rods, pins, wires…..it all sux !
I truly wish you comfort and good luck going forward.
May God be by your side and comfort your pain the rest of your days brother.

I've had 2 fusions in the last 15 months....lumbar spine posterior and cervical spine anterior....my mobility and coordination has spanned a range from 100% wheelchair bound to rollator then to canes, and I can finally use my hands without fumbling again.

Now I only struggle with stairs still and on those I use a really stable adjustable staff/cane thingy....it's great.
