Alcoholism

I completely understand that. And every situation is unique I'm sure. It just seems some who are able would be willing to declare victory. But absolutely whatever works and keeps people between the lines.
Congrats to your wife!!!
Like most I guess, I have a few family members that will never get to the other side because they refuse to even acknowledge it.
Oh no brother, I was agreeing with you. I find it strange as well. If I was 8 years sober, I’d consider myself “cured.” I would quit AA and stop declaring myself an alcoholic but I understand the thought process from the other side too I guess.

I have a friend since around 99 who ain't had a drink in at least 30 years and he still goes to meetings about twice a week. He's a firm believer in the program and that's fine. It's just in my mind it SEEMS like there would be a point or you know like a set amount of time when most people would feel like they beat it. But I guess it's a different kind of addiction. Like my first comment here about how it's everywhere you go all the time. Everywhere you stop for gas there's beer right there. So considering that I have to say it's worse than dope addiction given how easy it is to access .

Understood and agreed. 100%.

I certainly did not intend to offend anyone about it. And if it has worked for you or someone close to you then that's obviously a good thing. My only point was that they constantly drill it into your head that without them you will never make it. To ME that's a bit much.
But again if it's helped anyone here then by all means keep doing whatever works for YOU.
And again, your completely mistaken. AA doesnt drill anything of the kind into anyones head. Ans if thats what you came away with its a shame you werent ready to hear what was being said. I hope you have found whatever works for you.

There are many ways many people quit drinking. Its funny that nothing had any measure of success until the 30's when AA was founded by 2 men trying to find some sort of relief from something they seemingly had no control over. Many millions world wide have been helped since. AA doesnt get much if any press, nor does it ask for or want it. AA just trudges along one drunk trying to help another make another day sober. They dont ask for money from any groups, nor would they accept it. They have no religious or political affiliations. There is a lot more, but your mind seems made up so I wont bother. Your vitriol seems misplaced sir.

You actually need to “earn” your seat in AA to understand what it’s all about. Having to go due to a dui won’t do anything for someone who doesn’t want to quit. Any casual observer would think ill of the people in those rooms. Boy, would they be wrong.

People go to meetings 30,40…50 years after their last drink because they love the group. It’s strange being in a room full of people who understand you when you’re a complete train wreck.

Quitting and staying quit are two different things.

Why didn’t you quit ODT once you got enough guns?

Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. It doesn’t go away. I haven’t had a drink in 21 years. The stupidest thing I could ever do is consider myself “fixed”.

Okay I tried to say previously that if it works for you or anyone you know then that's a positive thing. I also tried to say I wasn't trying to offend you or influence anyone's decisions. So having said all that AGAIN I am now officially done with this conversation and thread.

The first thing you would need to understand about alcoholism and recovery is that the drinking was simply a symptom of the problem. Stopping drinking without addressing the problem makes living with the problem unbearable. I still attend 2 to 3 meetings a week after 34 1/2 years as it keeps me focused on the solution to the problem so taking a drink doesnt sound like a good idea. I go because I want to, because thats where I learn and remember and try and help others do the same. Could I stay without a drink and not go? Maybe. Could I stay SOBER and not go? NO And there is a difference between not drinking and being sober....to me. Just not drinking isnt sufficient for me. I require more out of life.

Back then, Bill W and Dr Bob would turn away folks who still wore a watch. They weren’t “done” yet. 😂
