Anyone ever built a scrambler?

I’m strongly considering picking up a project bike and where I live is a ton of dirt roads connected by short stretches of pavement.

So I’m thinking about going the scrambler route as just a play bike. Anyone built one? Words of advice?

Biggest question would be what would the best donor bike be? I’m leaning toward a 400-500cc single cyl or parallel twin. I know a lot of custom fitting will need done, that’s fine as I want to develop some skills I don’t have. Thanks

when you are considering a bike, check to see if there is skid plate for it, or if not measure the width of the frame at the front and find one you can fab into shape to work. think of how to mount it , that won't be easy on a bike intended for the street only. Especially if it has a spin on oil filter mounted up front. they can be delicate.

Most of the FS roads are well kept and easy at slow pace, some (the fun ones) can be a challenge.

Light weight and 5-6" of travel would be my priorities.
