Anyone ever seen this?

I just use a disposable ear plug when needed

I purchased a Colt CRE18 that had one in it. I put in all my builds. I keep em on hand in my parts box. They are made of the same material spark plug wires are, silicone. They just add a little tension to keep the upper snug to the lower. A lot of lower receivers have a little tension screw built into the lower which does basically the same thing. The Wilson Combat lower I just purchased has a little recessed area to hold one in place. Just leave it in there. If it does anything it makes the rifle feel more solid. If I pick up a rifle and it has to much slop it feels junky to me.

He’s not wrong…. The BCG and barrel is all in the upper(that’s literally the two most important parts) the trigger is in the lower”which doesn’t strike the bullet”
There is such a thing as sound and 'feel' regardless of what has to do with accuracy. IMO, they don't hurt anything.

A couple points I want to add here. If you install on in a rifle that did come with one be sure to trim the rear tab that point toward the upper so in doesn't come into contact with the bolt. Also they don't last forever and l have heard of them coming apart and melting and all that. That's just a simple case of rifle neglect and not inspecting the parts and probably not even opening up to clean it. It probably doesn't affect the accuracy too much but I guarantee if you go down a lot of long range AR-10 rifle shooters you won't find one ounce of slop in their between there uppers and lowers.
