You have a bad brush probably. Those early Miata alternators are relatively inexpensive, and the replacement is a piece of cake.
Hard to make a guaranteed diagnosis sight unseen, but i'd hook a voltmeter to the hot lead AT the alternator, if it's less than 13.5, it's junk, guaranteed.
