Classic case of stand your ground ? He has no duty to retreat . He was not the aggressor or the instigator. Dude that sucker punched still running that mouth. Turned back around because he had to finish the paperwork he was filling out before he was ambushed.

I suppose it's possible he had a permit, but it's unlikely.

Permits aren't that hard to get in Chicago, just need to spend the time and money to jump through the hoops.

That being said, he's going to jail for a long time if he's a 'law abiding citizen'. There's no way he can claim a valid self defense plea in this case. There was no immediate threat to himself or anyone else.

I'd bet he'd be a lot better off if he was a gang member. They he would be an oppressed minority and they would probably let him out on bail in a couple of hours.
