Avoiding suspicious deals...

Agreed :thumb:

I have had a few say that they were in the military but could NOT produce a Valid GA ID. They had a SC cell phone number. I always Google the phone numbers and even Google names if I know it, which in my opinion is a good idea.
Being a veteran myself, I would probably give a veteran a better deal than I would anyone else, but I will NOT break the law by selling a handgun to a non-resident plain and simple. My career would be ruined if I were to break the law, so why in the heck would I risk doing that to sell a handgun? It ain't gonna happen scooter !

I'm in this boat a lot being a military person assigned to GA. Since in my home state of MI I had to pay a around 500 for my initial permit (200 for a training class, 200 for permit 100 for pics&finger prints) switching to a GA ID would void that. Besides GA and MI have resiprosity so its pointless, not to mention I have a DC cell phone #. So, I always make a point to tell people up front, hey Im in the military stationed here do not have a GA ID but will gladly show you my Mil ID, DL and a copy of my orders. Most of the people on here appreciate it and are cool with it, I've even shown the code stating that's all that's required of me. Some still are suspect and would rather not, but hey, that is their right all have been polite about it too. But that's because the caliber of people on here are good people and in my experiences have been legit...

My buddy back in VA tells me stories about some of his dealings with people on the VA trader and its night and day for ODT.

#1. We have 2 ATF members on this site but they aren't "looking" to pin anyone.

#2. I can't imagine this being a place to "get rid of" a stolen gun. Lakes, construction sites prepped for concrete pour, etc....

Just saying

Agree 100%, and if anyone had been busted on here every one would have known about it in a very short time ( I've never heard of one ) so I'd say its a safe trading site, just use common sense.

What are S&S boards?

As a "responsible" gun owner, I'm going to go by the rules because it's the right thing to do. On a side note.......all boards would slowley die off without newbies.

S&S= Swap and sell

And you're right, all boards will slowly die off without newbies. I welcome new members to the ODT because it means that they will get into the game and there will be more good deals for everybody. Being a newbie does not mean you are suspicious, but most suspicious people will probably have low post counts and no feedback. If someone has been around for a while and has a decent feedback score, it is less likely that they are involved in any shady dealings. But regardless of post count or feedback score, we all need to be careful about every deal we make. It only takes one to ruin it all.

1. As I mentioned in my OP, the ATF has been known to lure people into making bad deals on other sites by mentioning to members that they "probably couldn't pass a background check" or giving some other red flag. If the member goes ahead and sells them the weapon anyway, then they are guilty of a crime. It is unlikely that the member would be prosecuted personally (for one thing it is entrapment) but a series of such deals could be used to shut down a site like this. No disrespect to our ATF members here, but with everything that is going on with Eric Holder and the Fast&Furious scandal, it is better to just avoid dealing with the ATF at all. Don't give them a bullet to shoot you with. (pun intended)

2. True, but lakes and construction sites won't meet you in a parking lot with a handful of cash. Nobody is going to go to the trouble of stealing a gun just to turn around and throw it away.

Look guys I'm not saying that anything shady is going on here or has ever gone on here. I'm saying lets all just be smart and keep our eyes open so that it never becomes an issue. Nobody ever thinks that something will be a problem until it is.

First of all I am new to the site and if we never give "newbies" a chance then they are gonna leave the site!
I also have a rhode island cell phone # and I know it may seem shady but it's more of hassle for me to change it so i kept it.

I am also a newer member, have a PA plate, PA number, but have a GA license, and plan on having my concealed carry in the near future. I know the number probably throws people off, and when I meet up im usually asked why my plate is PA, but like you said, its more of a hassle to change registration and numbers than its worth. Honestly, this site, and buying firearms in general, is the only reason that I got the GA license, which was an extremely simple process. I cant really deem any of the new comers with low post counts as shady until I speak with them. One phone call can tell you alot about a person and the firearms they are selling. If I see any ads saying "huned dolla hi point" or "cant buy a gun in stores" they are automatically getting ignored. As many of you mentioned, its just not worth it to get in trouble over selling one gun. Ask for proof of residency and if they can show it, and sound like a normal, law abiding individual, I will deal with them regardless of their time on the site. Alot of these guys just arent used to being on a forum, and at first, it can be confusing. Thanks again everyone for being so welcoming on this site, great group of people here.
