Have a small food plot on the back side of my 5 acres. It does back up to 145, mostly
planted pines. The genetics in this area are pretty bad, bucks for the most part are
non typical, having a great one side, the other... not so great, often just a huge, long spike.
This year my target deer is "Split", a nice 5 on one side, a huge split on the other, figure him
to be 4&1/2 years old. Anyway on the evening of the 26th a doe and her young one were
feeding when this guy was trailing them about 3 minutes later. Doe ran and he looked to follow.
It was close to dark and I thought it was Split. Not sure but my second look at the high side and I
pulled the trigger. A handgun hunter, this one took a 215 grain swc from a Smith 657 with a
Burris red dot. Shot was a little low, at 45 yards but clipped heart and plumbing, chest was full of
blood. I guess him to be 3&1/2 and am glad he is out of the breeding pool. Guess him to have weighed
close to 175 and me being 65 he weighed a lot more by the time I wheeled him to my truck. Now to
catch Split during legal hours.
