i was thinking i'd warn anyone who used their debit card at the atm outside of the bank of america in cumming across from captain d's to watch out for unauthorized purchases. i had the charge reversed and hopefully it does not happen again

the charge was just shy of $20 so the false charge does not need to be large

i just had one unauthorized purchase after withdrawing funds form that atm on saturday. the charge was for some toys and hobby store that i have never heard of and this is the first time it has happened and i do not believe in coincidences so you might want to check your account just in case

i do hope none of you are effected by this type of thing

This happened at the Mall of Georgia Bank of America a few weeks ago, IIRC three people reported unauthorized charges on their cards after using the ATM in front of the Target store near the Mall of Georgia. The police recovered a card reader that was left attached to the machine. The newspaper article didn't say whether or not there were any arrests made in connection with the incidents.

I dont use ATM's for that reason, and I never put my pin in when I'm buying something from a retailer.....

If someone ever tried to rob me they'd be dissapointed, I never carry cash.

It's becoming prevelant... My wife's business card had a unauthorized charge for $3 one day... a couple days later the card company denied a purchase of like $800 (which was completely fraudulent). It wasn't until they tried the $800 charge that the company discovered the $3 charge- moral of the story is to keep a close eye on your money/accounts.

We had a scam like this run in england a few years back. A company called Link (an actual company) put up ATMs in streets, gas stations and other places the banks would not. Clever criminals would place their own "link" machines which were hollow and had a man actually inside them. When you put your card in, he scanned it, recorded what pin you inputted and then the card was returned saying the machine is out of service. They of course cloned the whole card and pin and would take everything before you noticed it was gone.

Thankfully it didnt happen to me but lesson learned, if the machine looks sketchy, dont touch it.

Thanks for the heads up!! I've never seen a 'skimmer' but I'm aware of them. You think you would be safe using the ATM at a bank but you never know.

Skimmers can be internal but the cheap ones stick on the outside of the card reader (unless there's a man inside your ATM???). You should always do a quick inspection of the card reader anytime you swipe your card.

I've started grabbing the card slots on ATM's and gas pumps and trying to remove them before putting my card in... not foolproof, but gives me a little more peace of mind. I'm sure I've gotten some strange looks from people wonder what the heck I'm doing.
