Shooting a black bear in SD should be an absolute last resort. A wounded bear is dangerous to be near and even a lethal shot may take long enough to drop it to allow time for it to drop you. A warning shot or a loud shout with you waving standing your ground will run almost all of them off. They do NOT protect their cubs the same way brown bears/grizzlys do. They run one way and the cubs usually go up a tree. Then they come back later for the cubs. There are NO documented cases of black bears killing people to protect cubs....ever. Black bear attacks are almost always cases of people feeding bears resulting in them associating people with food. It's rare for even these bears to attack after a loud shout or warning shot. I have them in my yard/around my house fairly regularly. I've never even had to fire a warning shot. They are pretty skittish about human contact.
Erm....not sure about shooting as a last resort as if you are attacked by a black bear you are supposed to fight for your life....
