My husband and I are taking the plunge this year (2016). We've signed up for 3 classes, and are going to install our first hives this spring. I am new and know almost nothing about bee keeping. I would love to get your experiences, advice, etc.

Thanks,

Barbara

Don't expand the hive too quickly.

I harvested last year then added one deep box and two shallow boxes to replace the one shallow box i harvested, all excited about getting another harvest in the same year...

Lost the hive because there weren't enough bees to defend all that extra space.

Also, pay attention to the moisture content of your honey. I harvested mine too early and wound up with just a little too much water in the honey.

It was my first attempt. Will try again next year.

Take as many classes as possible. Read any books that you can get your hands on. My number 1 suggestion (unless you have unlimited disposable income) is start buying extra supplies now. Always have extra hives/supers and frames on hand. Your bees are going to swarm and split and you want to be ready for that. I know Newnan is a bit of a haul from Woodstock, but I would highly recommend you looking into the Coweta Beekeeping method (http://www.cowetabeekeepers.org/new...g-method-sustainable-beekeeping-in-the-south/). Be patient and be prepared for loss.

I say all this w/ less than one year of beekeeping under my belt. But, these are the things that I have learned since starting.
I would also recommend getting your starter hive from: http://www.bustersbees.com/ Order early because he always runs out.
