aye sir. books and youtube are great starts, but I need to learn by doing, and build my friendships by doing, also.
I was halfway hoping someone had some family out there in the same boat as me, and I might be able to jump on the training wagon.
Keeping my eyes peeled for meetups. If anyone wants an extra set of hands to work on their BOS, I'd be happy to see what I can offer for a weekend or two. Figure I can pickup some pearls along the way.
I will engage the survival section in future.
Thanks for the welcome all!
Greetings-
I'm a beginner survivalist trying to figure out- yep- where and how to begin.
I started out a city kid and worked corporate until I was 25 or so, then jumped ship and have been a carpenter for the past 10 years. I'm good with my hands and kinetic learning, but I mostly work alone. Cold start: no hunting, fishing, or survivalist experience, but I've backpacked a lot of California and the Pacific Northwest with conventional gear. I just want to get back out there, turn up the volume a little bit, and lose some of the gear weight. I'm kind of a loner, and don't have any friends that are experienced or interested anymore. On a very tight budget with a 1 year old at home.
Can anyone suggest free or very cheap ways to start picking up some skills, given that I don't have an "in"? I'm looking for opportunities to do target practice if someone has a large property that would permit it, meeting friends that can get me up to speed with my firearm safety and techniques (beginning shooter), basic fishing, shelter improvisation, cqc, bug out considerations, fire building, trap building, knots, identification of edible plants, field medicine, fishing and hunting (primal and conventional), etc. Most importantly, I need help with common sense, learning how not to leave a trail, and in figuring out what skills I actually need that I haven't thought about yet. I'm a bit of a ***** about hunting for sport since I've never done it, so please bear with me while I get in the game.
This may sound nuts to anyone raised in the outdoors, but for those of us that weren't so lucky and have had our heads up our tail until now, it's disturbing when we wake up and realize how weak we actually are. I don't like feeling dependent. I also miss being outside and having friends that do too. My wife's friends are great, but I need more out of life than TV shows and gossip about other friends.
I'm low profile, a little bit of a shut-in, mid thirties, married, straight, and have a baby. I don't have any agenda other than learning and finding like minded friends, so please be on the same page. If you've got leads, recommendations, meetups, ideas, or just wanna kick back and burn a beer over a SHTF discussion, please drop me a line. Located in NW Atlanta, just outside the perimeter, but happy to travel.
Thanks in advance!
