Being Prepared Without Being a Prepper

Already great stuff mentioned. The list can get too long very quickly but I would certainly recommend a power brick that is kept charged at all times.

Being able to keep your cell phone on during a prolonged power outage can be invaluable.
Yes. I keep one in all of my bags and a solar one in my truck tool box.

I will also add, and you may cover this during the potential lecture you'll give on the subject:

Being prepared is not entirely about the stuff you have on hand, but your mindset in general.

Keeping up with current events, knowing when and where to go certain places. Knowing about severe weather before the day of. Keeping more than a quarter of a tank of gas in your vehicles at all times. Things like that will get you through significant events successfully more often than a locked and loaded AR or satellite radio will.
Very true.

There is actually a lot of good information and basic kit information here.

I'll check these out.

If they're dependent on prescription medication nothing else matters.

Exercise and be healthy. Go to the dentist and get checkups. Eat well and take care of yourself. That's what matters most for all of us, especially seniors.
Great point. I love all the people that have all of the expensive gear but can't walk 25 yards without being out of breath. Kinda defeats the purpose. I have actually started an exercise routine because of the hurricane. I sat in an office for the two years prior to the hurricane and dang near died when we started clearing the road the next morning so people could get get out to get supplies.

Here's some pretty decent list to work off off..

We keep at least 6 gallons of water on hand. Sam’s has is packaged buy 5 get one free essentially. Dried beans & 5 lbs of rice along with multiple cans of canned meats. This alone will last a few weeks/ months when coupled with the few cases of Mountain House freeze dried foods we have. This isn’t a huge investment but well worth the fact we don’t have to run out & get anything other than bread & beer in an emergency.
