Best Caliber for Self Protection

im gonna be more realistic as far as if i had to pick 1 round for self defense for the rest of my life . . . .prob would be 10mm, 9mm after that.
#8 bird shot 12ga for me at mugging ranges. Thats grabbing me distance.
More holes equals more trauma to their body and self defense is about survival, getting someone off of me, not necessarily killing them.
Lots of birdshot will cover them up nicely and a center mass shot may possibly catch them in the face blind them as well. Depends on range.
If they are close enough, the lead is possibly still in the shotcup and thats hitting hard like a buckshot or maybe a slug but should cause more trauma as its more dense.

I personally would not want to shoot 12 out of an 8" barrel. I am going 44 special maybe magnum.
