When I carry I use a 1911 .45 ACP, but for the nightstand I have my G19 set up like this loaded with Hornady Critical Defense 115gr. with a Fenix LD-20 just in case the batteries go dead in the TLR-1:

12 gauge pump no shell chambered. The sound of racking a shell in the dead of the night might be enough. If there no time for that my Glock 19 and HK USP 9mm are handy and ready.
I wouldn't think the sound of anything short of #4 Buck hitting them would stop a crazy person?
