Best non-lethal defense?

very simple, big stick. there's a guy that walks his dog 7 miles a day. he carries a really big freakin stick, also uses as a walking stick

be careful with any kind of spray as to not get it on your own dogs. it's a pain to get it out of fur
Having hit a really pissed off dog witha stick before, i'll argue that that ain't gonna cut it brother, maybe for a medium sized dog, but in my experience it had little effect unless I was willing to injure severely. Mace didn't seem to work on two purse dogs too well once they got going. As tick is probably most reasonable though, or an ASP or soemthing similar but legal (hacked off golf club would work). A taser could kill a pooch i'd bet.

Paintball gun loaded with marbles are known to curb attitudes. ;) Trick is to use Nitrogen tanks and turn the pressure up.

Other than that perhaps a Baseball bat or 12ga with rocksalt/ beanbag rounds

It's tough going up against two dogs. I used to train dogs so here's some thoughts I used to go over with people with questions about fighting. Remember also, that the only thing two dog trainers agree on, is that the third trainer is wrong : )

Most dogs know what "No" means. So I would start with a firm "No" as they approach.

I carry a poopie scooper, which is basically a stick with a shovel on the end, use it to try and keep distance.

If they start fighting, your dogs at a disadvantage if you hang on to the leash, so you have to think about dropping it or unclipping. If you put a nail or two in the poopie scooper that could come in handy at this point also.

Usually one dog will be the obvious leader go after him and hopefully if he looses his will to fight, the other will follow.

Once they're engaged stay away from the business end and try to grab the other dogs tail, they might not have enough tail to grab so grab behind the haunches, hopefully they'll let go long enough for your dog to escape. You can also loop your leash around the dogs waist and try to pull him off that way. This is good b/c you can keep more distance and twirl the dog if you can.

If the dog still won't release you need to try to put a stick/poopie scooper down the dogs throat to engage the dogs gag reflex.

Maybe a lawyer can help here. But if the dogs bark, growl or threaten you in anyway, that's basically "assault". I think it needs to be intentional, but that's easy to argue. I'd probably start off with "assault" and settle for "disorderly conduct". Use your iphone's voice memo to help your case.

I would also call 911 instead of animal control. The police won't like coming out more than once.. and if you tell them you've been assaulted they should take it serious.

Get a Rottweiler :)

Having said all that, there's a house that we avoid b/c of two crazy dogs inside an electronic fence..

Good luck...

I work for a utility company and we are provided pepper spray. I can get the name if you would like. It shoots a solid stream about 15ft. I have never sprayed a dog in the face, but I have sprayed it in their general direction and they do not like it at all.

I have had jobs at the same location for days on end next to a fence with dogs. 95% of the time I can take a few minutes and make friends with animal so they stop barking at me and leave me alone. For that 5% that won't stop barking 5ft from my ear, a spritz at their feet will send them to other side of the yard. The deterent effect can last for days with one spray.

I would carry a pistol as a backup though. Nothing short of death will stop an animal that's determined to attack. LTL can only stop the half-hearted attempts.

Tasers and sticks allow them to get way to close. Shooting up the neighborhood doesn't work either. I know as much about this as you do but you gotta get them before they're on you. There's spray for bears and dogs that discharges an accurate jet out to 25 feet as opposed to a cloud that doesn't stop Shih Tzu. Pit Bulls are famous for their ability to continue the fight with broken bones and severe injuries so get 'em quick. I'd invest in something designed for this purpose and then find your own pit bull (lawyer) and sic him on your neighbor. Put the responsibility where it belongs and teach him proper humility.

Tractor supply sells rechargeable cattle prods with lengths from 32" to 54". Total of $62. Might even work on muggers

Used to use these on the farm a long time ago. Not sure I'd count on it with fighting dogs. They encouraged cattle, but didn't knock the xxxx out of them. Might want to get some outside help/aggressive encouragement.

Having dealt with 2 attacking dogs charging full on, I wouldn't let your wife go out alone. Scary as hell and difficult targets. Might be easier if they were going for your dogs, but I wouldn't risk it. I don't envy you.

Gotta go, I have a radiator leak. Antifreeze running down my driveway.
(Valve was part way open. Damn neighborhood kids..)
