Sometimes we get bad instructions and have to use our own judgment. I've seen a decline in the competence of ATC lately. Many have no idea of the speed and performance differences between aircraft and will clear jets to land behind cessna 152s. Garbled English in thick foreign accents is becoming more common. Just a few weeks ago I was talking to some guy in the tower who told me to "remain north-south of the airport at all times". I asked him for clarification and he just repeated it. I had no idea what he meant so I just did 360s with my head on a swivel looking for traffic until I got my landing clearance. I made extra sure to scan every inch of both runways/taxiways before I set it down too.

If the pilot makes a mistake, the pilot dies. If the air traffic controller makes a mistake, the pilot dies.

I saw the decline in the early 2000’s when the FAA began DEI hiring instead of basing it on performance, merit, competence and ability and then it went on steroids with Obama. I’m surprised we haven’t had aluminum showers over some major airport yet (they’ve come close) but they are relying on TCAS, ADSB, AMASS as “electronic supervisors” to catch mistakes but eventually something will slip through and everyone will be crying “how could this happen”.

The FAA is just another example of government hiring incompetent, unskilled workers to do a job they are incapable of performing and the tax payers pay the price but they met their quotas and that’s all that matters. BTW did I mention….

It's also worth noting that Chinese accents in particular have become very common on the radio. Sometimes I call for a clearance and it feels like I'm ordering takeout.

One of the lowest flight hour to maintenance hour aircraft ever operated from an aircraft carrier. That particular model of turbo fan engine is one of the most reliable ever built. It also powers the A-10 warthog.

Our Aircraft Commander forgot that rotor wash from a CH-53E is stout. It was about 5 degrees on some mountain on the wrong side of The Adriatic. LT (Big Sexy) Alexander said piss on this guy I am taking off right now right here. Anyway in giddiness I ran back to the ramp in time to see tents and some people rolling around like tumble weeds. It looked cold.

200 mph + we used to take FNGs out to do external lifts as ground crew and watch them do the “Superman” when they ran out from under the bird.

It was awesome, for us.
