the tree's got a crack in its stock.
Take it to a gunsmith.
Maybe you'll have to do what the old British SMLE Enfields had done to them to prevent stocks from cracking-- wrap the wood with piano wire and shellac topcoat to hold the wire in place.

Or, Ceracoat it!
Pick a good color scheme and nobody will know the tree's been refinished.

Those trees smell like dirty socks when they bloom. If one was on my lot I'd cut it down and burn it.
