Building a precision savage axis in .308

An axis is certainly a budget rifle but I bought one in 308 just for a cheap hunting rifle i wouldnt care much about and I have to say I'm much more impressed with it than I thought I would be. Mine is pretty darn accurate and I like the accutrigger. Not sure I'd bother with modifying it but at that price you can have fun and go at it with a can of spray paint and not care. For a ga distance hunt rifle it's perfectly serviceable. A sub moa distance shooter it is not though.

I just figured it would be a good challenge I may just leave it alone but at same time it would increase its value a good bit with the upgrades hell may try and get a rem 700 sps tac 308 and mod it instead

My old axis in .270 was a true sub 1" rifle outta the box with cheap federal 130 gr. As many have seen, these can be accurate budget guns but the law of diminishing returns will apply here bigly. If you want to do a Savage, a 110 based action might be what you want. I've got a good friend that regularly outshoots " high end " gun owners with old Savages that he has massaged. It will increase the value like stippling does to a glock, You will know how much you have into it but it will sit here on the classifieds for years. People will see axis and keep on moving. If you are going to do it in stages Get the SPS. Just my humble thoughts

I have an axis . It’s the only modern bolt action I own. The action is not terrible but the mag catch is what kills it . It’s plastic and the mags are expensive . I made my own adapter and have since fixed that issue .

But for what it’s worth don’t put a new paint job on a pinto. Buy a decent entry level anything else other than axis rifle . You will thank us later
