Building first AR15

Now I’ve spoken with rainier arms and got a
Return label as they deemed this barrel bad by their standards and completed the necessary test with the gas block closed. They were thinking May be the bolt was opening too fast and not slowing it to stay in battery long enough.

Anyway got the barrel and bolt sent back to them and received my new hand selected barrel back. Scrubbed the bore clean with brake parts cleaner and hoppes # 9. It took 22 dry patches to come out without metal flakes on them. I ran a lightly oiled patch down the bore and went to the range today to test 9 different ammos and they all shot like pure hell again except for the very first group.

What would you do at this point?

I’m kind of at the point of ordering a proof research SS barrel that’s in stock ready to ship or waiting 8-12 weeks for the Kreiger custom barrel.

Never owned an AR and it’s time to build one. Take me to school on good parts that won’t break the bank, good middle of the road parts. Would like to build a good shooting mid range 100-250yard rifle. Nothing benchrest heavy but mid weight I guess. Tell me what you suggest ODT gurus!
Watch this old video about 10 times first.

How long between groups are you waiting before firing the next group? I'm thinking the barrel may be overheating and causing issues.
Minimum 5 minutes between groups. Barrel is not getting over heated, it’s easily touched and held with bare skin. I leave the bolt open. Write down all my chrono data. Load the next magazine and set up chrono for next set of groups.

Did I miss where you gave us group size and distance? Is upper left group about 1.5" at 100 yards?

What is your normal five shot group from your best rifle?

Recognize that some barrels require a bit of break in to smooth out and start shooting their best.

The first round of testing the avg group size was 2.09”, second round was 2.11”. I have not measured the groups from today but I would guess they’re over 2” on average. All 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

My normal 5 shot groups out of my bolt guns are 1/2” or smaller at 100 yards.

For reference here is a 200 yard target with one of my Begara B14R’s with Eley Tenex. Perfect 200 score with 11 x’s. While this is one of my best days, I can hold my own behind the trigger if the gun is doing its part.
