I know the general rules for buying and selling weapons, but is there any way to check if a guns as been used in a crime or is stolen?
Can a pawn shop/ gun dealer check it all out for you or is it one for the police?

Most of them will not do a check over the phone (unless you have a buddy on the force).
They will require having the gun in hand to do the check, so they can confiscate it, if it comes back stolen.

100%

I have a few friends on the force and even they wont let me call it in because if it does come back, they have to confiscate right then on the spot

Simple solution..
Require all FTF transaction to meet at your local PD parking lot. When the seller arrives, take weapon in and run the numbers. If they arrest the seller you arent out any dough:p
